बहुजनांच्या वस्तीत जाऊन त्यांच्या पंक्तीत बसुन हितगुज करून प्रश्नांची उकल करणारे राजे म्हणजे लोकोत्तर समाज सुधारक, जाणताराजा, राजर्षी छत्रपती शाहु महाराज, यांचा जन्म सन १८७४ रोजी कागल येथे झाला. प्राथमिक शिक्षण संस्थानात पुर्ण केल्यानंतर पुढील शिक्षणासाठी राजकोट येथील राजकुमार कॉलेज येथे १८८५ ते १८८९ पर्यंत शिक्षण घेतले. त्यानंतर युरोपीय शिक्षकांच्या हाताखाली त्यांचा इंग्रजी भाषा, राज्यकारभार, जगाचा इतिहास इत्यादी विषयाचा अभ्यास झाला.

सन १८९४ मध्ये कोल्हापुर राज्याची सुत्रे हाती घेतल्यानंतर अखिल हिंदुस्थानचा प्रवास करून आपल्या देशबांधवांच्या सामाजिक परिस्थितीचा सुक्ष्म अभ्यास केला. या नंतर ते युरोपला गेले व युरोपीय लोकांची भौतिक प्रगती ही अवलोकन केली. ब्रिटीश सरकारच्या गैरमर्जीची पर्वा न करता राजर्षी छत्रपती शाहू महाराजांनी आपल्या समाजाच्या सर्वांगीण सुधारणेच्या चळवळी चालु ठेवल्या.

पायी गती, हाती शक्ती व -हदयी मानवाची उन्नती हा ध्येयवाद स्विकारून भारताच्या इतिहासात आजरामर झालेले छत्रपती शाहु महाराज यांच्या कामगिरीचे खरे महत्व ज्या काळात ते जन्माला आले तो काळ नजरेसमोर आणला, तर महान, उत्तुंग व्यक्तीमत्व आपल्याला दिसते. समाजात पडलेली दरी, पराकोटीची हीन आवस्था, मानवतावादी तत्वज्ञानाऐवजी भाकडकथांनी बाधीत मनांना गाळातून बाहेर काढणा-या समाज धुरीणांमध्ये छत्रपती शाहु महाराज अग्रेसर होते, यात शंका नाही. अज्ञानी समाजामध्ये नव्या युगाचे चैतन्य निर्माण करण्याची कामगिरी पुर्णत्वास नेऊन प्रेम, दया, बंधुत्व, वेदोक्ताधिकार सर्व हिंदु समाजाला मिळाला पाहिजे हा महाराजांचा आग्रह होता.आपण वाचत आहात माहिती सेवा ग्रूप पेठवडगावची पोस्ट छत्रपती शाहु महाराजांच्या कृतित्वातुन माणुसकीचा झरा पाझरत होता. शिक्षण या वर्गात महत्वाच्या सुधारणेस त्यांनी हात घातला. गरीब व होतकरू विद्याथ्र्यांसाठी त्यांनी प्रत्येक जातीची केली. शिकुन ज्ञानी झाल्याशिवाय समथ्र्य, शक्ती बहुजन समाजात येणार नाही या उदात्त हेतुने वेळोवेळी शिक्षणाची हती अत्यंत साध्या पण प्रभावी भाषेत विषद केली व त्याचा आग्रह धरून ती प्रत्येक्षात साकार देखील केली.

शिक्षणाची गंगोत्री गरीब शेतक-याच्या घरातही गेली पाहिजे, यासाठी महाराजांनी आपल्या राज्यात प्राथमिक शिक्षण सक्तीचे व मोफत केले. समाजातील अंधश्रद्धा, अज्ञान दांभिकपणा, स्त्रीजातीवरील अन्याय, आस्पृश्यवरील अन्याय, या विरूद्ध प्रबोद्ध प्रबोधन व कायदे केले. शिवाजी नवे क्षात्रजगदगुरूपद निर्माण केले.

माझी सर्व प्रजा मराठी तिसरी इयत्ता जरी शिकून तयार झाली असती तरत्यांना राज्यकारभाराचे हक्क आनंदाने देऊन मी आजच विश्रांती घेतली असती, महात्मा फुलेंच्या समाजसुधारकी वृत्तीमुळेच महाराजांना सत्यशोधक समाज जवळचा वाटला. स्पृश्य-अस्पृश्य भेदभाव न बाळगुन आपल्या राज्यात गरीब होतकरू, कष्टकरी, शेतकरी, शेतमजूर, दलीत स्त्रियांच्या शिक्षणासाठी छत्रपती शाहु महाराजांनी स्पेशल स्कॉलरशिप सुरू केल्या. त्यांना नौकरीच्या जागा दिल्या. लोकांच्या -हदयसिहांसनावर चिंतन विराजमान होणारे छत्रपती शाहु हे राज्यातील महान राजा तर होतेच पण त्याहुन ही अधिक त्यांच्यातील माणुस मोठा होता. खवळलेल्या वाघाची मान पिरगळुन त्यास ठार करणारा व आसवलाबरोबर कुस्ती खेळणारा साहसी पराक्रमी राजा, मल्ल विद्येला प्रोत्साहन देणारा मल्ल राजा, दलितांना पोटाशी धरणारा दलित्तोधारक राजा, कलावंताच्या कलेचल जाण असणारा रसिक राजा,बहुजन समाजाची सर्वांगीण सुधारणा करणारा सुधारक राजा अशा या राजाची किती रूपे सांगावीत. दलितांच्या दुःखांना समजुन घेवुन समाजात विषाक्त जातीयतेची बीजे समुळ उखडून फेकत छत्रपती शाहु महाराजांनी सामाजिक सुधारणेस गती दिली. अस्पृश्याप्रमाणे शेतकरी व कामगार यांच्या उद्धारासाठी नवे नेतृत्व उभा करणे, उद्योगी निहाय एकचसंघ ठेवणे, विधायक कामावर भर देणं हे छत्रपती शाहु महाराजांचे जणू धोरणच बदले. कामगारांनी संघटीन व्हा आपले हक्क प्राप्त करून घ्या तुम्हाला हे सांगताना मला कसलेच भय वाटत नाही. की हे युग संघटनेच आहे. शिक्षणाने हे साध्य होईल या उद्गाराबद्दल मला माझी राजवस्त्रे उतरून ठेवावी लागली तरी मला त्याची पर्वा नाही. शेती उद्योग व व्यापार, राज्याच्या उत्पन्नाच्या बाबी संचार व दळण वळणाची व्यवस्था, सामान्य जनजीवन आणि परिवर्तनवादी विचार, आपल्या भाषणातून केवळ विद्यापीठावरून न मांडता प्रत्यक्षात झोपडीत जाऊन गरीबांशी हितगुज करणारे, प्रसंगी त्यांच्या समवेत भोजन करणारे आणि दुखितांच्या आश्रुंना पुसणारे छत्रपती शाहु महाराज यांनी आपल्या राज्यात सामाजिक, आर्थिक, सांस्कृतिक व शैक्षणिक परिवर्तन घडवूून आणले. कर्तबगार संस्थानिक छत्रपती शाहु महाराज यांनी आपल्या कारकिर्दीत न्यायव्यवस्थेत सुधारणा केल्या. आपली उपक्रमशीलता सामाजिक व सांस्कृतिक परिवर्तनाच्या कामी लावली. महात्मा फुले यांचे कार्य पुढे चालवणारे छत्रपती शाहु महाराज यांनी अज्ञान, अंधश्रद्धा, अन्याय या विरूद्ध कार्य केले.

याच बरोबर राजर्षी छत्रपती शाहु महाराजांनी आपल्या करवीर संस्थानात सन १९१८ मध्ये मोफत व सक्तीचा शिक्षणाचा कायदा केला. सामाजिक सुधारणांमध्ये धैर्य व स्थैर्य दाखवणारे लोकराजा राजर्षी छत्रपती शाहू महाराज यांना विनम्र अभिवादन.
