महाराष्ट्रात सद्यस्थितीत कृषि क्षेत्रात जी प्रगती झाली आहे, त्यामागे वसंतराव नाईक यांची दूरदृष्टी कारणीभूत ठरली आहे असे म्हटले तरी वावगे ठरू नये.वसंतराव नाईक यांनी त्यावेळची मर्यादित साधने आणि प्रतिकूल परिस्थितीचा सामना करुन राज्यात कृषीक्रांती घडवून आणली. ते हाडाचे शेतकरी होते. ‘शेती आणि शेतकरी’ हे त्यांच्या जिव्हाळ्याचे. अभ्यासाचे विषय राहिले. शेतीला आधुनिक स्वरुप देण्यासाठी त्यांनी सातत्याने प्रयत्न केले. राज्यात ‘कृषी विद्यापीठां’ची स्थापना केली. शेतकऱ्यांना संकरीत बियाणे उपलब्ध करुन अन्न-धान्याच्या दुष्काळावर मात केली. 1972 च्या दुष्काळाचं संकट त्यांनी आव्हान म्हणून स्विकारलं आणि दुष्काळनिवारणाचा शाश्वत मार्ग दाखवला.
दिवंगत वसंतराव नाईक यांच्या कार्यकाळात महाराष्ट्रात चार कृषी विद्यापीठे सुरु करण्यात आली. या कृषी विद्यापीठांच्या माध्यमातून शेतीमधील आधुनिक तंत्रज्ञान शेतकऱ्यां पर्यंत पोहोचले.

शेतीकडे एक उद्योग म्हणून पाहिल्यास शेती अधिक फायदेशीर होऊ शकते. कृषी क्षेत्राचा हा मंत्र तरुणांनी एकमेकांना देणं आवश्यक आहे. या क्षेत्रात नवनवीन कल्पनांची गरज आणि वाव दोन्हीही आहेत. कृषी उत्पन्न विकण्यासाठी देखील माहीतगार कुशल व्यक्तींची गरज असते.
आपल्या पूर्वजांनी पारंपरिक पद्धतीने शेती केली आणि त्यातून वर्षानुवष्रे भारत सुजलाम सुफलाम राहिला आहे खरे, मात्र नवीन काळानुसार नवीन तंत्रज्ञानाची आणि संशोधनाची मदत घेऊन शेती करणे अधिक संयुक्तिक ठरणार आहे. कृषी क्षेत्र ओढग्रस्त झालं तरी अखेर ती आपली गरज आहे व आपणच या क्षेत्रात नवनवीन सुधारणा घडवून आणून पुन्हा या क्षेत्राला नवी झळाळी देऊ शकतो. त्यासाठी थोडय़ा बुद्धीची गरज आहे.
