Leopard strays into Ballarpur, injures three
Mazhar Ali, -CHANDRAPUR: In a daredevil rescue operation, forest officials and wildlife activists managed to capture a full grown leopard that strayed into Ballarpur town, about 160 km from Nagpur, on Monday morning. The leopard injured three people, including honourary wildlife warden Bandu Dhotre, as it jumped over the roof and sprinted through narrow lanes of the densely populated Santoshi Mata ward.
Wildlife warden Dhotre, who took initiative in the rescue operation, claimed that the leopard may have strayed into the town while following the cattle returning after grazing in Karwa forest adjacent to Ballarpur town. The beast first clawed Samiksha Thengre during early hours in the lane. It then jumped over the high compound wall to intrude into the cattle-shed owned by Suresh Pal and took shelter into the fodder compartment of the shed.
On getting information, forest officials and rapid response unit (RRU) of forest department rushed to the scene. Dhotre and Wildlife Protection Force, a rescue wing of NGO Eco-Pro, too reached the spot. Thousands of onlookers crowded the lanes and the roofs in the area. Two riot control units of police were deployed on the scene to control the overwhelming mob.
"Rescue workers covered the cattle shed with the protection net to close escape routes for leopard. Then I entered the shed and released all the cattle tethered inside. Meanwhile, the beast sat calmly in fodder compartment, a covered section in the cattle shed," Dhotre said.
Dhotre, Digamber Balki, tranquilizing expert, and another forester then climbed the roof of the cattle-shed and peeped inside by removing roof tiles to locate the leopard. The, beast, however, turned aggressive when he saw rescue workers peeping through the roof.
"We were sitting on the roof peeping inside while the agitated leopard kept pouncing on us. We were quite confident that the leopard will not be able to leap vertically at a 10 feet high roof. However, the beast shocked us as he pounced with great ferocity and made way through the roof tiles to charge on shooter Balki and me," Dhotre exhorted, recapturing the horrifying encounter with the feline.
The leopard clawed Dhotre on his hip as he staggered away from the charging beast on the roof. The big cat then charged at the onlookers and forest department staffers standing on the roof of adjacent building. A forester welded his stick at the beast, forcing it to turn away. The leopard, while trying to escape, injured a policeman as it aggressively dashed through the lanes. The beast, then took shelter in a small water tank in a bathroom.
"We cornered the beast by blocking the entrance of the bathroom. Rescue workers then bored a hole in the bathroom's roof and Balki shot a tranquilizing dart at the leopard. He missed a shot, but next two darts hit the target. The sedated beast was later captured and shifted to Rambugh forest nursery in Chandrapur," said Dhotre, who actively participated in the rescue operation despite heavy bleeding from his hip injury.
The veterinary doctor found no visible injuries on body of the leopard during routine physical examination. Forest officials here are likely to release the beast back into the forest after getting a nod from the top bosses.

Leopard causes panic in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district
"I had never thought a leopard could make a straight jump this high. When it came onto the roof, it targeted me and even though I ran to safety, the animal was perhaps faster," Dhotre said.
After attacking him, the animal dashed into an open bathroom and took shelter into a water tank therein.
The same procedure was followed.
It was covered with a net, an injured Dhotre and his team climbed onto the roof and tranquilised the animal, this time successfully.
The forest department team shifted the animal to a cage.
It will be released into the forest on Monday night itself.
Dhotre was later taken to a hospital where he received the necessary treatment.

Leopard creates panic in Maharashtra village,
bites a man’s butt
The residents of Santoshi Mata ward in Ballarpur city of Chandrapur district in Maharashtra woke up on Monday morning in the middle of noisy disturbance and fear.
When a man was peeing from the broken roof, a leopard sprang out of that portion from the broken roof that was a shocking attack from the beast. The man was jolted back and he was fallen capsized while escaping the attack. But he did not manage to escape from the biting of his butt.
It attacked the shed (houses of hundreds of cows, calves and buffalos). According to the people, it might have come from the vast forest, which surround the area are part of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. The animal was roaming around the place for a prey.
Around 6 am, young wildlife activist Bandu Dhotre, who is a local hero after many such rescue missions, was informed of this. He made it to the spot with his team in time.
After few minutes, a team of forest department was also rushed at the spot to help Dhotre. In the meantime, another team of police force was also rushed at the place to manage the huge crowd. More than 6,000 villagers had gathered on rooftops, trees, lanes and where not by then so that the animal couldn’t reach them.
“Every time a wild animal strays into human settlement, curious onlookers risk their lives to get close to the animal. Today’s was not a one-off incident. This happened in Meerut a couple of months ago. It happens everywhere. But I urge forest department and wildlife experts to formulate proper policy for rescue operations like these. So that crowds do not put us and themselves in danger,” Dhotre said.

ballarpur is not far from the Tadoba tiger reserve. In the summer season, the man-animal conflict reaches its peak as wild cats often stray into human habitats in search of prey.
"The leopard was trapped inside a stable and we had secured all exits. We reached the roof and removed tiles to get a view of it to shoot the tranquiliser.
"All of a sudden the leopard took the help of a pillar and leapt over 8 feet into the air. It breached the roof and attacked me," said 33-year-old Bandu Dhotre, an animal rescue expert from Chandrapur.
However, other stick-wielding members chased the leopard into an empty bathroom.
The asbestos roof of the bathroom was breached and the tranquiliser duly shot, leading to the animal's capture. Dhotre said he had conducted over 50 operations to rescue wild creatures, but this was the first time that he had been attacked. According to Deputy Conservator of Forests (Chandrapur) Gajendra Hirey, the leopard had ventured into the Santoshi Mata ward in Ballarpur early in the morning.
It first attacked a woman, identified as Samiksha Dhengare, and then hid into the house of Ramkrishna Pal. Forest officials were informed about it at 4am. The rescue team, Hirey said, had also roped in the riot control police to cordon off the area as curious bystanders posed a risk to themselves. The leopard, which is a male aged about 24 to 30 months, will be released into the wild soon, he added.

India: Leopard Attacks Man as it Runs Through Village Shanty Houses in Escape Bid
A wild leopard that went hiding inside a shed in a western Indian village attacked a man in a bid to escape. A video footage of the incident that has gone viral on the web shows the fierce animal coming out of the shed's roof as a wildlife activist, Bandu Dhotre, tries to remove the tiles from the roof to make room for shooting tranquiliser dart. The leopard first attacked Dhotre putting its claws on to his back and then jumped from the rooftop and ran through the village houses.
"I had never thought a leopard could make a straight jump this high. When it came onto the roof, it targeted me and even though I ran to safety, the animal was perhaps faster," Dhotre, the man who has rescued over 50 wild animals trapped in human settlements, told the India Today. Dhotre and his team along with forest department personnel finally managed to tranquilise the leopard, which had taken shelter in an empty water tank inside an open bathroom in the village.
The incident took place in a village in the Chandrapur district of the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Such occurrences of man and animal conflict are common in the region, which is in proximity with the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. However, what worries the authorities is the safety of locals during such conflicts as thousands of people gather to witness such incidents risking their own lives. According to officials, a wild animal gets more infuriated amid cheering crowds. "Every time a wild animal strays into human settlement, curious onlookers risk their lives to get close to the animal. Today's was not a one-off incident. It happens everywhere," Dhotre said.
A farmer in Maharashtra was also attacked by a leopard recently. He escaped with injuries on his head. In another recent leopard attack, an eight-year-old girl was killed while she was asleep at her house on the outskirts of Katarniaghat sanctuary in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Her body, dragged by the animal, was found in the forest.
