Chandrapur cops finally lodge plaint

PUNE: A week after a youth escaped from their custody, the Chandrapur district police lodged a complaint with the Pune police on Friday.

The man, Raju Kisan Salunkhe (25), a resident of Korpana in Chandrapur, had given the police the slip at a bus depot near Pune station on September 28. Salunkhe, who was not handcuffed, pushed the cop who was holding his hand and ran away.

On July 12, the Chandrapur police had booked Salunkhe under section 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code

for failing to return the motorcycle of his friend Mahendra Atram. They traced Salunkhe's wife's cell phone to Chakan. A police team comprising Arun Mandavkar and Bandu Gotmukhe reached Pune on September 26 with Atram too reached Pune for helping police identify Salunkhe. On their way to Chakan, Atram spotted Salunkhe with his wife and alerted the cops, who nabbed him.

The police team spent the night in Chakan and reached Pune railway station on September 28 to board the Mahalaxmi express. Because the train was scheduled to leave late in the night, the cops took Salunkhe to a restaurant near the state transport bus stand for dinner. Salunkhe, who was not handcuffed, pushed a policeman holding his hand and ran away.

Ukaji Sonawane, senior inspector of the Bund Garden police station, said they will question his wife and relatives for tracing his whereabouts. A case has been registered against Salunkhe under section 224 (escaping from lawful custody) of the Indian Penal Code.

Arun Mandavkar, one of the cops escorting Salunkhe, told TOI over the telephone from Chandrapur that they searched for Salunkhe at nearby the state transport bus stand, Pune railway station, Sassoon general hospital and other crowded places. "We have also been to Salunkhe's house at Korpana and Chakan and some others places but to no avail. We finally registered a complaint with the Bund Garden police. Salunkhe fled before we could show him arrested. We have submitted a report to senior officials."

Off the police, following which he was taken into custody in crime register no. 101. 2013 registered with the Gadchandur police station in Chandrapur district. His wife Sugandh was given information of the police action.
